IMBW?

What is this place about, anyway?

IMBW stands for I Might Be Wyatt. This website is my blog, and hopefully, will contain projects and articles about the subjects I am studying.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Wyatt. Benjamin Wyatt. I prefer to go by my last name.

I grew up in a household full of Braceys. My mom remarried when I was very young, so "stepdad" isn’t stepdad, he’s my dad, and like any family, we all love each other, when we’re not at each other’s throats.

Often, our immediate family was jokingly referred to as "the Braceys and the Wyatt". Always one to jump headfirst into non-conformity, I decided that I liked being the "Wyatt", so I ran with it. It made me feel all unique and special inside.

Names are interesting characters. The name "Benjamin" means "son of the right hand". "Wyatt" means "little warrior". It seems odd that my first name was given to me by a man who chose not to be a part of my life; I did not want to be known in terms of a man I hardly knew. I prefer Wyatt because it lets me be who I am on my own terms, and not in relation to an almost complete stranger.

It also just makes me giggle. My name means "little warrior". Admit it, it’s kind of funny!

Some individuals feel very uncomfortable calling me Wyatt. Most people embrace the name, but those who don’t seem unable to understand why I would want to go by my last name. A few individuals take genuine offense to the notion: how dare I go by last name! They ask me confused questions. "Why would you want to go by your last name? Are you Ben, or Wyatt?"

The assistant store manager at my last retail job listed my name in the store directory in the following format:

Wyatt, Ben(Wyatt)

Even though there were only five managers in the store, she insisted. I can only imagine some baffled employee, sobbing in the corner, holding the directory in one hand and a phone receiver in the other. "He said his name was Wyatt... why did he lie to us all?"

In the end, names are important because they help define us. But none of us should take ourselves all too seriously.

So, who am I? I Might Be Wyatt, but I'm not making any promises.

Oh, and I Might Be Wyatt is a pun on my favorite band of all time: They Might Be Giants. They keep putting out songs and they just won’t shut up.
