How to Survive Calculus I
MAT 191, or Calculus I, proved to be a very difficult course. For me, and for many other students taking the course, the most challenging aspect of the class was not the new material. I struggled with the trigonometry, geometry, and even some of the algebra required to solve calculus problems. I worked very hard, and ended up with an A+ in the class, and I am very proud. However, the average test score for our first exam fell in the 40s range, and I spent many hours wrestling with problems with no reliable source of support
This project is an attempt to collect information from pre-calculus courses and present it in an easy to read format. I am highlighting areas with information that many of us stumbled over in our classwork. I have chosen the most difficult problems we were asked to solve and focused on the non-calculus skills needed to solve them.
As I continue sections, I hope to post them. If anyone finds the information useful, or has any suggestion for revision or future topics, please email me.
The guide will be free, but if you share this with others, please leave my name on it. If you knew how much time and effort went into working through the material, you would agree that a little credit is due. And in that spirit, the page design and the clip art inside the document are downloads from Microsoft Office Online. I highly recommend Office 2007; the good folks at Microsoft have created an intuitive, robust set of office tools.
Good luck!
